Who's your favourite guy?

Mike Delfino - Cute, cute Mike...but he has such bad taste really. Love the roguish, handsome charm he exudes.

Ian - Mr Bad-Taste Number 2. Sexy Brit accent, gentlemanly ways and did I mention he's oh-so-rich...

Tom - The family man. Boring and homey but always reliable. Loves his wife and adores his kids.

Carlos - Sex fiend on the prowl. Passionate, aggressive and macho man with an erupting libido.

There's this other slightly psychotic guy (Bree's husband) but I don't think anyone would pick him, so...not worth the mention, yea?

Mike would be my typical crushee in the past :) Ideal man would be a cross-breed between Mike and Tom. Someone who makes me go weak in the knees but whom I can trust to love me and my kids forever.

The Answer to a Good Night Sleep?

Snowdown, Microfibre Pillow

P bought a pillow on Friday, and that boy was raving about how deeply and soundly he slept on Friday night. I can attest to that, he slept a 12-hour marathon, had lunch and went straight back to sleep away most of our precious Saturday. To be honest, I was jealous. Sleeping is, to me, a prized commodity. I would steal to experience divine, uninterrupted sleep. And so I did! That pillow was mine for Saturday night and I refused to share! *keke*

Did it work for me? I guess it did, though not as effectively as for P. I slept a full 8 hours without waking up in-between. So inspired was I that this might be the answer to all my sleepy woes that I rushed down to Tangs today to get the same pillow! The pillow's really nice...it's soft, light, fluffy and doesn't flatten when you lie on it, unlike the goosedown pillows I've been using. Let's hope it works tonight, and every other nights to come.

Watched La Vie En Rose, a movie on Edith Piaf, the legendary French singer in the 20th century. It was poignant, heart wrenching and very tragic. The music was beautiful and strongly emoted the hardship and pain Edith endured as a child, teen and adult. Read about Edith Piaf here. A little excerpt which may be of interest to my friends as this was the missing link which left us all confused during the movie.

She was about 16 years old when she fell in love with a delivery boy, Louis Dupont. At 17 she had her only child, a little girl named Marcelle, who died at the age of two of meningitis. Like her own mother before her, Edith found it difficult to care for a child while living a life of the streets, so she would often leave Marcelle alone while she was away, and Dupont took the child to raise himself before Marcelle's death months later.

And the following excerpt that shows I was the only one really paying attention to the movie *haha*

Edith's next boyfriend was a pimp by the name of Albert who took a commission from the money she made singing in exchange that he would not force her into life as a prostitute; one of her friends, a meek girl named Nadia, killed herself when faced with the thought of becoming a prostitute and Albert nearly shot Edith when she broke things off in reaction to Nadia's death.

Also treated myself to a new CD.

She remembers - Part 5

She's my dear friend cum ex-roommate from uni who remembers my birthday faithfully every year..almost. This year, she was late in her bday wishes, so I punished her by making her buy me sashimi. We had tuna belly, salmon and scallop sashimi, which were all so good. The tuna belly literally melted in my mouth...ooh la la! :)

Chill out at Coffee Bean after dinner!

Heaty or viral infection?

Remember the stories we read during our kiddy years where naughty children who indulged in too much sweets would end up with a tummyache and toothache?

If you didn't pay any heed to these stories before, you really should. Coz they're real, not some bulltrap parents conjure to scare their kids. The monster hiding under your bed or in the cabinet, however, is definitely a product of our parents' overactive imagination. In my youth, the monster that could make me pee in my underpants and shudder with fear was affectionately termed "Mok Mok". If I misbehaved or didn't want to sleep, Mok Mok would be lurking in some corner waiting to catch me and take me away to his home, and I'll never see my parents again. It was amazing how a fictional and totally unbelievable character could strike so much fear in me as a kid.

But I digress. More often than not, the ailment that strikes you may not take the form of a tummyache or toothache.... In my case, overeating and self-indulgence in rich and "heaty" food over the past week has manifested itself into a sorethroat, headache and slight fever *groan* The TCM believers say I am "heaty", the Western doctor told me that I have a viral infection and may be coming down with a flu.

Oh well, same remedy whether you belong to the TCM or the Western clan: Drink more water, get more rest, avoid fried food etc etc.

What's your Mok Mok?

Happy Birthday to me - Part 3

Spent the entire day with darling P! First, he made me go soppy with a card (yea I know, I am so easy to please...). Then, he surprised me with a bday present, when I wasn't even expecting one (I swear!). And best of all, he painstakingly lined up a whole itinerary aimed to relax and pamper me! :)

We are happy and running late for our spa appointment!

Our destination - Spa Sauvignon, a redwine-themed spa sanctuary on No. 71, Bussorah Street (opposite Hotel Parkroyal and the Concourse).

This is where we had our massage (separately of course!)

Sipping on red wine after our treatment.

The masseur was really quite something. She skillfully kneaded and eased all the knots in me till my whole body went limp. Though it hurt quite badly at times, the whole experience was so deep and penetrating that I felt myself drifting off to zzz land.

After the movie, we rushed down to Lido to catch the premier of Harry Potter - Order of the Phoenix.

Verdict? So-so. The movie itself was bearable, though Harry, Ron & Herminone looked overgrown. I thought Ron looked pretty goofy and cute though *giggle* And what's up with Harry and his tight-fit tees? What irked me most were the unruly, juvenile and undisciplined school kids in the same theatre. At the start of the movie, some of them, presumably belonging to a Harry Potter fan club, screamed "We love Harry Potter!!!!" Oh man, this is not some concert where you can scream your heads off can! Throughout the movie, these kids kept walking around, scrunching plastic bags and generally creating a din in the cinema. The girl next to P kept lighting up our area with her handphone and some idiot behind me was kicking my chair intermittently. It was horrible and P never wants to watch a movie at Lido again!

The white, faceless and not very photogenic guy on the right of Sirius is none other than the incredible Dumbledore!

Pasta buddy - Bday Part 2

Dinner treat from CX, the Italian Mama and my Pasta Buddy. We were contemplating Russian food, but as usual, we could not resist the temptation of hot, savoury and tasty pasta! In fact, we used to frequent "Pasta Fresca" when it was still around at Shaw Centre. When our regular haunt closed down, we were devastated. CX somehow had the power to curse any stall/restaurant/cafe she frequents *kidding*

We decided to give "Spageddies" a shot, since we couldn't remember the last time we ate here!
Shining (i.e. oily) happy faces!

The Tomato Tri-colour Fusilli with breaded prawns that I ordered.
It was mediocre.

Watch CX struggle with the cream fetucinni with grilled chicken.
She got sick of it after 3 mouthfuls?

Despite the lacklustre food (and stomachache for me), we were still smiling!

Earlier in the afternoon, something really funny happened. One of the partner's secretary was carrying a huge box of cake and I had a fleeting thought that MAYBE that cake was for me! Haha, yes you can say in the most disgusted voice you can muster, "Dream On!" The cake was actually for my partner, the biggest shot in the office. While they were singing the bday song, I happily substituted her name with mine......

Bygones

Sometimes, when I think back, it amazes me how during the times when I was with my ex-firm, none of my ex-colleagues had really caught me and P outside as a couple. Sure, we've been spotted here and there...waiting for a cab, window-shopping etc. Suspicions were rife, but I had always managed to convince myself that we were caught as "good friends" or "close colleagues". There was just too little evidence to charge us.

Recently, P and I bumped into H, an ex-colleague of mine and still-colleague of P. It felt really really weird being "caught", but this time, there wasn't anything to hide anymore. The coincidental encounter left me feeling out of sorts, as H had always been someone I regarded as a friend when I was still with my ex-firm, until I got together with P. At that time, P and I were trying so hard to prevent our little secret from being unearthed by prying hands. Yet, rumour-mongers persisted in digging deeper. How would you feel if the people you regarded as friends gossipped and speculated about your life behind your back? Confused and disappointed, I had callously turned my back to these so-called friends.

H and I later messaged each other, and we realised what happened was really a case of a bad misunderstanding. I felt betrayed and hurt, and she felt that if I didn't want to talk about it, there was no use in asking me about it. It felt good clearing this misunderstanding up, and I missed talking to her like back in the good old days. In fact, I miss so many people from my ex-firm, and the days we spent at suburban Tanjong Pagar. Sadly, things change, people move in and out of our lives but at least we have the beautiful memories to live by.

Birthday celebration - Part 1

Advance bday celebrations with my folks in JB over the weekend. As our favourite Chinese restaurant was fully booked for a wedding reception (again!), we decided to go back to this one restaurant we used to frequent years ago, on the presumption that if the restaurant is still standing after all these years, it must be doing well.

When we got to the place, we were surprised that the road leading into the restaurant was pitch black! There wasn't any indication of life beyond the restaurant signboard. But we persisted, and found the place. What struck me most was how badly the restaurant was maintained! Old and dirty looking tables and chairs that looked like they've been through a lot of hardship were scattered sparingly around the restaurant.

Dad ordered a wide variety of seafood that made our mouths water - cheese lobster, salted egg yolk crab, steamed fish, gong gong, bamboo, a veg and bday noodles. All of us were famished and couldn't wait for the food to come. But when they did, it was such a disappointment! The lobster was overcooked and the cheese tasted like crap, the gong gong and noodle were bland and unappetising. Only the fish, bamboo and crab were palatable!

After dinner, we had the ice-cream cake that P had so thoughtfully bought. Though the food was not great, I was glad it did not spoil our happy spirits. Thanks to Mom and Dad for the bday treat, to P for getting me a cake, to the 2 cute bros and Tai Q who graced the occasion with their presence! :)

On a separate note, went for eyelash perming but it was a failure! Thanks to the inexperienced gal who screwed up. Bleah!

Melts my tummy

Guess what? My 2nd buffet, not too far from the 1st! :)

This time, it was a double date. Me and P, P's mom and dad. We decided on Melt - The World Café at the stylish Oriental Hotel as P and I have read many good reviews about the place and it was touted the 2006 Restaurant of the Year by some magazine (source to be confirmed "chuckles").

We were warmly greeted at the entrance and given a brief tour of the cafe. The tour was a good planning opportunity as we strategised how we wanted to work our way round the cafe. First up, the "cold" section - coz it was right in front of our table. We heaped our plates with baby lobster, fresh prawns, mussels, oysters and sashimi, yummy! The lobster flesh was a tad soft but the prawns were succulent and sweet!

There was a wide array of Asian food - mostly local, Thai and Indian, a small section for Western, and outdoor for BBQ. I particularly enjoyed the tender duck breast meat infused with fruit essence, and the Thai basil chicken was simple yet delightful. The BBQ was mediocre, but I did not have high expectations as BBQ food usually turn out too dry for my liking. We skipped the local delights section totally - seafood soup, char kuay teow and satay were too ordinary! In fact, I would suggest they scrap this section totally, just a waste of good space.

What impressed me most was the last section - desserts! My my! This time, we loaded our plates with the exquisite cakes and jelly concoctions in delightful colours! One clear, innocuous-looking jelly adorned with a small slice of orange, tasted suspiciously like tequila-pop jelly! I almost gagged tasting that one - I hate tequila! And then there was waffle with vanilla and chocolate ice-cream, which is my all-time feel-good food, a disappointing chocolate fondue (allo, milk chocolate is sooo uncool!), durian pengat (though not as good as the Merchant Court one), ice-kachang etc etc. For fruits, make sure you ask for mango. It's not pre-cut and displayed like the rest of the fruits, but if you ask, they'll cut it fresh for you.

All in all, a truly gastronomical experience, made all the more pleasant by the excellent service provided by the staff. We were greeted everywhere we went, used plates were promptly cleared and the service staff even fold your napkins as you walk away from your table!

The Yellow People

Guess who's coming to Singapore?!!?

I am so thrilled! I'm a huge fan of "The Simpsons" cartoon series, though unfortunately, not big enough a fan to have watched every single episode. Come to think of it, it was my brother Hay who started me on The Simpsons. I remember thinking to myself then how retarded and jaundiced the yellow creatures look. But their silly wit and caustic humour eventually won me over! My favourite character, is none other than the rascal - Bart Simpson.

"Eat my shorts!"

I'm going to mark the date down - 27 July 2007. Coincidentally, I get paid on the same day! So I'm gonna be generous and treat P to this movie (coz I know he has no love for Bart and his lovely family *sob*).

And do do do check out the official website for the movie. It's loads of fun! You can create your own Simpsons Avatar, take a tour of Springfield (home to our yellow friends) and play some inane games that'll drive you bonkers.
